There's this amazing feeling when you're driving down Mexico 1, the Baja Transpeninsular highway, and you crest a hill and find yourself staring at a horizon lined with turqoise. That colour, depending on where you are, is either the Sea of Cortez or that beautiful thing that happens when Cortez meets the Pacific. That's Cabo San Lucas for you, and that's where we are tonight. Half-way through the trip. At the destination. 22 degrees North, more than halfway to the equator from the homeland.
We made it!
It was a crazy day. We met some dirt bikers from Vancouver who are spending 3 weeks down here, riding the craziest, nuttiest roads you can find. We quite innocently thought we were hardcore. 7,000 kilometres -- or whatever it ends up being -- in 13 days is not for the faint of heart. But these guys are riding nothing but the worst, dustiest roads on the peninsula. We had fish tacos with them. They both work at body shops in Vancouver. Hats off to them.
This has been an epic trip, in just about every way. Last night, a search for beverages took us on a quest around Loreto, the town we camped out in. We couldn't find any place open, and began asking people where to turn. Then one helpful soul uttered two incredible words: "follow me." Suddenly, I felt like I was living the dream of being on Amazing Race. We followed him to an open store and bought what we needed -- with some extra for him. Then we headed back to camp, where we had a beer on the beach. Amazing.
This morning we woke up -- or, make that, Brett woke up -- before the sun rose. That gave me a chance to get pictures of the sky turning orange over the Sea of Cortez, with pelicans and seals silhouetted against it. Amazing. Such a privilege it is to be here.
The drive to Cabo was longer than we expected, and both hotter and windier. But we got here in time to catch sunset over the beach and dive in to the waters.
The only problem with Brett: he's not my wife. Were Mo here, this would be a romantic idyll. I guess I'll have to settle for a Cabo bromance.
