It was Good Friday - 12:01 AM and I was sitting in Vancouver watching the cold rain come down. After reading Nathan's post - I couldn't help but consider what it would be like to ride 2-3 days in the 40 degree Fahrenheit rain on the way to the Mexican border. Would that be fun? After contemplating the pro's and con's--I came to the conclusion that only pros are 'bragging rights' that we rode it both ways (ego) and that we save a couple of hundred bucks on gas/rental fee's... The con's list was long and included concerns for personal safety, not getting sick, being in a rush to cover mileage and missing sights, visibility in the rain, etc.
After consulting w/ Nathan we decided to rent a Penske truck for the 1 way drive from Bellingham WA to San Diego.
The plan: tie the bikes in the 16' truck on Monday April 5th and head to Portland for the night. I should mention that Nathan is getting up at 4 AM on April 5th to start his trip to Vancouver where he should arrive around noon. This night, we'll recover in a nice hotel and then head off on April 6th for San Diego. We're planning on sleeping in the truck next to the bikes on April 6th (hey we have the camping gear). We're hoping to hit San Diego on Wed April 7th - drop the truck off and head across the border in the afternoon to explore Northern Baja. The current plan involves us riding down to Cabo San Lucas and then driving back... we're unsure if Nathan can make it back to Calgary or if the mountain passes will be closed due to snow and ice. We'll figure this part out later... right now, we just need to get down there!
Here's the map showing the first leg of the journey (it's pretty cool that it also shows all the volcano's we drive by... Let's hope Mt Baker doesn't blow anytime soon as if it did we'd say goodbye to the Mt Baker Chalet and some of the best pow riding in the Pacific NW)
